Somerset 3, MV 2

SOMERSET – Del Araujo went 2-for-3 for Martha's Vineyard, which lost a close one to the Raiders in its Eastern Athletic Conference opener. Will Stewart pitched well for the Vineyarders (0-4, 0-1 EAC), giving up just three earned runs on eight hits over five innings.Araujo had a double and a triple for MV.

Bishop Stang 16, MV 5

OAK BLUFFS – Ben Ciciora lasted just three innings for the Vineyarders, allowing seven earned runs and striking out five in a loss.Starring offensively for Martha’s Vineyard (0-5, 0-2 Eastern Athletic Conference) were Cody Coutinho, who went 2-for-3 with a single and a double, and Chris Morris, who was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

OAK BLUFFS – Anthony Piland went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a stolen base yesterday to lead Martha's Vineyard to its first victory of the season, an 8-1 baseball triumph over Cape Cod Academy.Ryan Fisher struck out six and gave up three hits over 4 innings to pick up the win, walking none. Evan Sosa pitched well in relief, yielding just one hit and no walks for the Vineyarders (1-5). Corey Perrotta was a defensive standout.

Bishop Feehan 7, MV 2

OAK BLUFFS — A four-run seventh by the Shamrocks proved too much for Martha's Vineyard in an Eastern Athletic Conference matchup.Tied at 2-2 after four innings, Bishop Feehan went ahead 3-2 with a run in the fifth, before adding four more for the winning margin.Ben Ciciora pitched five innings of six-hit, three-run ball for the Vineyarders (1-7, 0-3 EAC), striking out four and walking two. Lamar Moreis and Ryan Fisher had two hits each for Martha's Vineyard.

Norwell 5, Martha's Vineyard 3

WESTWOOD — Will Stewart went 5ª innings, allowed just two earned runs, walked three and struck out two but the Vineyarders' one hit wasn't enough to top Norwell at the Westwood Tournament.Norwell scored four times with two outs in the second inning to stake themselves to a lead that would not be relinquished. Two of the Norwell baserunners in the inning reached on errors. The Vineyarders (1-8) scored three runs off two errors and one hit, by Lamar Moreis, and will now face Foxboro in the tournament consolation game tomorrow.

Bishop Stang 14, Vineyard 11

DARTMOUTH — After falling behind early, the Bishop Stang offense quickly responded in a big way.Trailing by three heading into the bottom of the first inning, the Spartans brought 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on their way to a 14-11 victory over the visiting Martha's Vineyard Vineyarders on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Village."Unfortunately, we are used to getting down early, but we know not to change our approach. We stay patient at the plate, go to work offensively and try to get one good at bat after another after another and so on," Bishop Stang coach Nate Charette said. "We played very well offensively today, got consistent production throughout the order and got some good pitches to hit, and (we) hit the ball very hard."The Bishop Stang (4-2, 4-0 EAC) offense was firing on all cylinders and got solid contributions from everyone in the lineup. Evan Butler played the part of the table setter as the Spartans' leadoff hitter reached base in all five of his plate appearances, recording three hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Justin Harding also played well, recording three hits, a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Dana Hatch drove in four runs on a pair of hits to go along with two runs scored. Brandon Roy was the fourth Spartan with a multi-hit game, scoring three times.Bobby Cote (two runs scored, two RBIs), Connor Madden (two RBIs, run scored) and Logan Sullo (two runs scored, RBI) also contributed hits while Mike Valois and Matt Guresh each chipped in with an RBI."These guys collectively as unit hit as good as any group I have ever seen," Charette said. "When one guy gets hot they all get hot and they are able to put up a bunch of runs in a hurry and this is the third or fourth time we have put up six or seven runs in an inning."Bishop Stang's baserunners were relentless and put constant pressure on the Vineyarders pitchers and defense. The Spartans had five different players steal a base, including Butler (three), Roy (two), Cote, Madden and Sullo, totaling eight in all."When we face a certain team and see there is a weakness we try to exploit it as best we can and today we knew we can run on them," Charette said. "Although we do have one of the fastest teams around and we like to run and steal bases every game, but we can also hit the ball well so we aren't by any stretch a small ball team."It's a good thing Bishop Stang's batters were hot considering the Spartans' defense and pitchers struggled all game. The pitching allowed 11 runs, most of which came off tough-luck hits and a few following some key defensive errors."They got a lot of weak hits offensively; bleeders, weak ground balls that went through the infield, a couple of swinging bunts and a few flares that found holes and it was just one of those games that everything they were hitting was finding a spot in the field to fall," Charette said. "They are a good team, they are very pesky and have a lot of tough outs in their lineup and that is a big reason why they have been playing everyone so tough."After only playing one game in nearly two weeks, Bishop Stang's schedule picks up as the Spartans visit Coyle-Cassidy on Friday."We need to really tighten up our defense and star playing better defense all around," Charette said. "We need to start hitting our cut-off men, make sure our throws are accurate and if we do that, then we could win almost all of our games because our offense has been so good and the defense has been one of the things that have been holding us back."
