Martha's Vineyard 5, Wareham 5

A win, a tie, a loss
Tad Gold's seventh-inning home run evened the score with Wareham at 5-5, Thursday, giving birth to a baseball anomaly, a tie game. The game was called after nine innings with daylight fading and ferries calling. Presumably the game will be continued to a conclusion Friday, May 2, when the teams meet at Wareham for the second of the home and home series.Gold's homer was his fourth hit in five trips to the plate. Zach Coutinho was 2-for-5 and drove in four runs. MATTAPOISETT — Billy Johnson's grand slam highlighted a seven-run rally in the seventh that tied it at 11, but the Bulldogs pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.Tad Gold (run, stolen base) had three of the 15 hits for Martha's Vineyard (3-6).Nick Billingham (two runs), Jwann Johnson (two stolen bases) and Zach Coutinho (two runs) each added two hits.Old Rochester blew a seven-run lead in the seventh, but pulled out its seventh straight win.Chad Snow capped a 4-for-5 game with his second double and scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to help ORR pull out a 12-11 win over Martha's Vineyard on Friday. Its the Bulldogs' fourth walk-off win in its last five games."We certainly don't like to give up leads like that, but the kids have a knack of pulling it out," ORR coach Steve Carvalho said.Snow scored three runs and drove in two.The Vineyard pulled within a run on a grand slam and then tied it on an error. Ben Bergeron went the first 6 1/3 innings before giving way to Zach Choquette, who gave up the grand slam. Ben Church got the last out to keep the game tied.Choquette finished 2-for-3 with a homer and four runs scored.Church went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Matt Costa and Nate Holt, making his first career start, added two hits each.
SOUTH YARMOUTH — It was as dramatic a fielder's choice as the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School baseball team will experience this year.Chase Deluga scored a run with a ground ball to second with the scored tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, and D-Y beat Martha's Vineyard 4-3 yesterday. After the Vineyarders tied it at 3-all in the top of the seventh, Nick Montalto led off the climactic frame with a walk. Deluga ended the game with one out.MV (3-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first, and D-Y (8-1) regained the advantage with a two-run fifth. Montalto drove in Joe Allen and Alex Xiarhos with a two-out double to left.In the top of the seventh, the Vineyarders' Nick Billingham was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and came home on a squeeze by Jwann Johnson.Matt Sullivan picked up the win for the Dolphins after entering in the sixth. Starter Matt Dawson lasted 5ª innings, surrendering three hits and no earned runs and fanning six.MV's Scott Cleary went 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBIs.
MV 6, Wareham 3
WAREHAM — The Vineyarders used a five-run fifth inning to propel them to a critical victory over the Vikings.Tad Gold went 2-for-4 and Jwann Johnson was 2-for-3 for Martha's Vineyard (5-7).Zach Coutinho picked up the win, and Kendall Chaves earned the save.Earlier in the day, the teams resumed a suspended game that was 5-5 at the time the game was called. Gould scored the winning run for MV in the 7-6 victory.

Martha's Vineyard 5, Bourne 4

Mashpee 8, MV 7 (8 inn.)
MASHPEE — After eight pitchers between the two teams issued 26 walks and threw more than 360 pitches, the Falcons were rewarded with an extra-innings win and the 100th career victory for coach Dan Patenaud.Trailing by four runs entering the sixth, Mashpee (9-8) came back on the strength of a two-out, two-run double by Mike Marsters.MV took back the lead in the seventh, only to lose it to a bases-loaded walk and a Teddy Purdy sacrifice fly that forced an extra inning.Tyler Santos came into a bases-loaded situation in the eighth for Mashpee and escaped with a fielder's choice and two strikeouts.Joe Ruo (two hits, three runs) scored the game-winner from first with two outs on a Tyler Shute double down the left field line.Billy Johnson reached five times for the Vineyarders with three walks.

Game Recaps
D-Y 5, Martha's Vineyard 3
OAK BLUFFS - The Dolphins pushed across two runs in the
top of the seventh in the season-opener for both clubs.Max
Shay scattered eight hits and struck out four in a solid
six innings for the Vineyarders. Billy Johnson's two-run
single capped a three-run sixth as MV rallied to tie it.Tad
Gold went 2-for-2 with a double for the Vineyard.
D-Y 12, MV 11
SOUTH YARMOUTH - Sean Geary blasted a three-run homer in
the second inning and Dennis-Yarmouth rallied for five runs
in the fifth to defeat the Vineyarders for the second game
in a row.D-Y is 2-0 while MV falls to 0-2.Brian Sweeney,
the Dolphins fifth hurler, came in with the bases loaded
and one out in the sixth and recorded a double play to preserve
the one-run lead.Nate Eldredge went 3-for-4 with two runs
scored for D-Y while Bobby Ewing was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.Phil
Ford was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's for the Dolphins
while Geary scored three times.Tad Gold, Zach Coutinho and
Mike Cecilio each had two hits for the Vineyarders.
In their home opener, the baseball team were boosted by
banner pitching from Max Shay, but were unable to turn back
a late-inning rally by Dennis-Yarmouth en route to a 5-3
loss in the first game of a home-and-home series against
the Dolphins. Shay scattered eight hits and struck out four
batters over six innings, but the Dolphins scored two runs
in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Tad Gold went
two-for-two with a double and catcher Billy Johnson had
a huge two-run single to cap a three-run sixth inning in
the loss. Two days later, the Vineyarders went on the road
and lost to Dennis-Yarmouth 12-11 in a wild game that featured
the home run ball, several lead changes and two big late-inning
rallies. The Dolphins jumped on Vineyard starter Zach Coutinho
early, pushing across four runs in the bottom of the first.
But as they had done in the opener, the Vineyarders were
able to put together a big inning and scored seven runs
in the top of the second thanks to big hits by Coutinho,
Gold and Mike Cecillio. Although he pitched out of several
jams, Coutinho's control became a problem as the game wore
on. Coach Gary Simmons pulled him with runners on base and
no outs in the fifth inning and brought in junior Kendall
Chaves. Despite a valiant effort, Chaves allowed several
of the inherited base runners to score and the Dolphins
rallied for five runs. In spite of the opening losses, Coach
Simmons said his team showed promise. "Last year we
didn't have a lot of three-run innings - never mind seven-run
innings - so it was good to see us put together a couple
of big hits," the coach said.
Apponequet 7, MV 2
LAKEVILLE - Tad Gold went 2-for-4 with a run scored for
Martha's Vineyard, which dropped to 0-3 with a loss to the
Lakers.Joel Rebello went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen
base for the Vineyarders.Errors proved costly for MV, which
got a solid performance out of starter Sean Jordan in spite
of the loss. Jordan gave up six earned runs and struck out
six in six innings.
The Vineyard varsity baseball team suffered its third loss
in three starts when it was bested by Apponequet last Wednesday,
7-2. M.V. pitcher Sean Jordan was touched for six earned
runs in six innings. He fanned six Lakers. For the third
time in as many games, Tad Gold stroked two hits in the
losing cause.Yesterday's game at Greater New Bedford was
postponed. Today the team plays at Fairhaven. Seekonk is
here Friday, April 20, for a 10:30 am game.
Seekonk 5, MV 4
OAK BLUFFS - Zach Coutinho pitched a complete game and
struck out seven but the Vineyarders remained winless on
the season.MV falls to 0-4, with three of their losses coming
by a total of four runs.Coutinho yielded eight hits and
two walks while allowing four earned runs. Adam Herman went
2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Vineyarders while Joel Rebello
was 2-for-4.Seekonk took a 5-0 lead by scoring three runs
in the second and two in the third. MV had runners on second
and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh but
failed to score.
D-R 8, Martha's Vineyard 0
NORTH DIGHTON — The Vineyard's Kendall Chaves surrendered
five first-inning runs then settled down and pitched well
but the offense never got on track yesterday.Chaves allowed
just six hits in his five innings of work. Martha's Vineyard
had eight hits, two of which came from Tad Gold (a double).Adam
Herman had the defensive gem of the day, gunning down a
runner from center field for the Vineyarders (0-5).
Case 11,
Martha's Vineyard 5
OAK BLUFFS — The Vineyarders jumped out to a 4-0
lead before the Cardinals chipped away en route to the comeback
victory.Tad Gold had a hit, an RBI, two stolen bases and
a run scored for MV (0-7). Mike Cecilio (RBI) and Zach Coutinho
(two RBIs) each doubled.
Apponequet 3, MV 2
OAK BLUFFS — Apponequet turned a botched squeeze
attempt into the winning run, taking advantage of a Vineyarders
error to claim the victory in eight innings. After Apponequet
grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, Martha's Vineyard responded
with an RBI double off the bat of Joel Rebello. The Vineyarders
took the lead in the fifth, when Tad Gold collected an RBI
single.Kendall Chaves pitched well through seven innings
for MV (0-8), scattering four hits and allowing two runs.
Baseball
After jumping out to a big lead in the bottom of the first,
it looked as if the baseball team would cruise to its first
win of the season on Monday against Case High School. But
the Cardinals had other plans, as they tied the game in
the third and went on to rout the Vineyarders by a final
score of 9-4. First baseman Mike Cecilio and starting pitcher
Zach Coutinho each drove in runs in the bottom of the first,
and a pair of errors by the Cardinals helped the Vineyarders
build an early 4-0 lead. The home team gave back two runs
in the top of the second. But Coutinho struck out a batter
with a runner on third to end the inning. The Cardinals
tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the third on a throwing
error, followed by a wild pitch that gave the Cardinals
a 5-4 advantage. They tacked on additional runs in the fourth,
fifth and seventh innings. Coach Gary Simmons said blowing
the early lead was especially frustrating for a team still
trying to find its first win of the season. "You never
want to lose ball games, but this was especially hard to
take. We know we are good enough to win these games, but
we have to avoid these mistakes that let the other teams
back into the game," the coach said. Wednesday's game
against Apponequet was equally frustrating. After jumping
out to lead in the fifth inning, the Vineyarders watched
the advantage slip through their fingers when the Lakers
tied it in the sixth by turning a botched squeeze play into
the winning run. Kendall Chaves pitched well enough to get
a win, scattering four hits over seven innings and allowing
only the two earned runs. With the loss, the Vineyarders
fell to 0-8 on the season. Coach Simmons said he has tried
to keep his players from focusing on the win-less streak."But
I know this sort of thing does start to affect their confidence.
I try to tell them that this team is better than their record
indicates," the coach said.
ORR 9, M. Vineyard 4
OAK BLUFFS — Four-run outbursts in the second and
sixth inning lifted Old Rochester to victory over the Vineyarders.MV
rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
to pull within four runs, but were unable to get any closer.
Billy Johnson was 1-for-4 with an RBI double, and Joel Ribello
went 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Vineyarders fall to 0-11.
Bulldogs bite Vineyard
Coach Gary Simmons was ejected for protesting a close call
at first base too strenuously, here, Monday, and the M.V.
baseball team suddenly came alive scoring three runs in
the bottom of the sixth. It wasn't enough to catch the Old
Rochester Bulldogs who scored four runs in the second and
sixth innings to post a 9-4 win, their eighth win against
two losses. The Vineyard remains winless at 0-9.
MV 5, GNBVT 3
OAK BLUFFS — A four-run fourth gave the Vineyarders
the lead, and Zach Coutinho's inside-the-park homer gave
them some breathing room against Greater New Bedford Voke
en route to their first win of the season.Sean Jordan pitched
5ª to get the win, striking out three. Nick Billingham
pitched the 1¤ innings, picking up his first save
of the season.Ryan Brennon went 1-for-2 for MV (1-11) and
had two RBIs in the decisive second inning. Adam Herman
added an RBI in the second and was 1-for-3. Coutinho scored
twice and went 1-for-3 with the home run.The Vineyarders
look to continue their winning ways at Bourne tomorrow.
Bourne 12, MV 4
BOURNE — Dalton Baxter struck out three in a complete-game
effort for the Canalmen, helping his own cause by driving
in a run in a South Coast Conference win over Martha's Vineyard.Bourne
(9-4, 8-4 SCC) scored nine runs in the first inning, Harold
Rose knocked a two-run single and Keith Bilodeau had an
RBI triple to go along with Baxter's run-scoring single. The
Vineyarders (1-9, 1-7 SCC) scored all four of their runs
in the sixth.Zach Coutinho knocked in two runs with a single
and Jwann Johnson had two doubles and a single.Scott Bukoski
doubled, tripled and scored three runs for the Canalmen
while Dan O'Keefe added two hits and two runs scored and
Nick Martin collected two hits.
Baseball
After weeks of bad breaks, bad plays and bad outcomes,
baseball coach Gary Simmons was in no mood for bad calls
at home against Old Rochester on Monday. With the Vineyarders
trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the umpire called
a Vineyard base runner out at first after being caught in
a pickle while trying to steal second. Despite ample evidence
he was safe - including tape of the play from a camcorder
along the first base line - the umpire was resolute in his
call, even after coach Simmons charged the field to argue
the call. "That was horrible - not even close! There's
no way he was out!" the coach shouted. The ump kept
his cool for the time being, but was not so kind two plays
later when coach Simmons again rushed the field to argue
what appeared to be very generous strike call. After jawing
with the coach for a while, the ump dramatically pointed
his finger in the air and ran Simmons out of the game. The
game then slowed as the ump eyed Coach Simmons as he slowly
left the field; he admonished the coach for staying too
close to the dugout, and later for hiding out in the shed
in back of home plate used as the broadcaster booth. "I've
never been thrown from a game so I didn't know what to do,"
admitted the coach after the game. "It all seemed a
little silly." The event seemed to put a spark in the
Vineyarders, who scored three runs in the bottom of the
sixth. Players turned their baseball caps inside out rally-cap
style, and the players excitedly chanted teammates' names
and cheered every play. "I wish I saw that kind of
emotion every game... but it shouldn't take [their coach
being thrown out]," coach Simmons said. The spark was
short-lived, however, as the home team was never able to
get any closer than four runs en route to a 9-4 defeat that
dropped the Vineyarders to 0-10. On Wednesday, the Vineyarders
finally got their first win of the season when they defeated
Greater New Bedford Vocational 5-3. Zach Countinho had an
inside-the-park home run and Sean Jordan pitched five-plus
innings in the win, striking out three, Ryan Brennon also
sent one-for-two with two RBIs, and Adam Herman also had
an RBI.
Dighton-Rehoboth 9, MV 5
NORTH DIGHTON — Kendell Chaves went the distance,
allowing eight hits and striking out four for Martha's Vineyard.
Dighton-Rehoboth scored eight runs over the second and third
innings, and didn't look back in the SCC win.Tad Gold hit
his first home run of the year in the fifth inning for the
Vineyard (1-14, 1-12 SCC). Zach Coutinho went 1-for-3 with
an RBI and a run scored.
A new field for the old game
The sun shone bright enough but a blustery wind made sweaters
de rigueur, a windbreaker even better, for those attending
the first baseball game to be played on the high school's
brand-new diamond, Monday. The fickle breeze picked up dust
and carried it into the faces of batters and fans - a minor
inconvenience, at least for the fans. Dugouts were only
indicated by foundations and bleachers were not yet available.
More funds are needed to finish the job, but the field is
already a major improvement to the school's sports venue
and those responsible for building it are to be congratulated
and thanked. The visiting team of Wareham Vikings certainly
found the field to their liking. They scored 17 runs while
holding the Islanders to three. Adam Herman scored two of
the Vineyard's runs. Wareham improved to 8-5, while M.V.
fell to 1-13.Last Wednesday, the Vineyarders posted their
only win of the season defeating Greater New Bedford, here,
on the old field, 5-3. M.V. scored four times in the bottom
of the fourth. Zach Coutinho's solo home run in the fifth
inning was welcome icing on the cake. Sean Jordan started
and pitched into the sixth inning for the win. Nick Billingham
closed and was credited with a save.Tomorrow the new baseball
field will be opened officially with ceremonies including
recognition of the team's seniors, thanks to various benefactors,
and a ball game with Bourne (11-4).
GNBVT 13, MV 11
NEW BEDFORD — Tyler Andrade had three hits and drove
in two runs as the Bears outslugged the Vineyarders.GNB
Voke is now 5-13 overall and 4-13 in the South Coast Conference.
Pablo Zayas had three hits and had four RBI's for the Bears.
Seekonk 12, MV 4
SEEKONK — The Warriors had a nine-run fifth inning
to down the Vineyarders.Zach Coutinho started for MV (1-16)
and went 5¤ innings, allowing seven hits and nine
earned runs while walking two and striking out two.Coutinho
and Mike Cecilio each had a pair of hits for the Vineyarders,
who wrap up their season with a home game today against
Bourne and a road contest tomorrow at Wareham.
Wareham 11, MV 0
WAREHAM — Billy Johnson's second-inning single was
all the Vineyarders could muster in their season-ending
defeat against the Vikings.MV finishes at 2-18.Wareham put
the game away early with seven runs in the bottom of the
first and three more in the third. Mike Laperriere homered
for the Vikings into Spillane Field's left-field bleachers.
In their next to last game of the season, their last on-Island,
the MVRHS varsity baseball team posted its second win, edging
Bourne, 4-2. Winning pitcher Kendall Chaves started and
went 6 2/3 innings before running out of gas. Nick Billingham
relieved for the final out. Adam Herman reached all three
times he went to the plate.Thursday, the Islanders lost
to Seekonk here, 9-2. Zach Countinho started and took the
loss, giving up nine earned runs. The final game of the disappointing
season was Friday, at Wareham. The Vikings put the game
away early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. The
Islanders were shut out with one hit, a double by Bill Johnson
in the second. The Vineyard varsity ended the year at 2-18.
Baseball
Coach Gary Simmons admits there were frustrating times
during his team's disappointing 2-18 season. It seemed his
team had one inning every game in which shoddy defense helped
the opponent put up a crooked number, while suspect pitching
would often spoil a game when the Vineyarders had a good
day at the plate. But he said there were bright spots and
he is confident the team can build on this season and break
out next year. "Starting pitching was a consistent
problem for us, but looking ahead we have some young arms
we might be able to build a solid rotation around. And there
is every reason to think that our offense will only get
better next year," the coach said. Due to a string
of postponements and rainouts, the Vineyarders played a
game every day last week. While they lost to Seekonk, Greater
New Bedford Vocational and Wareham, they won their last
home game of the season on Thursday, beating Bourne 4-2
thanks to strong starting pitching from Kendall Chaves.
Chaves pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, struck out four and gave
up five hits. Adam Herman reached base all three times he
went to the plate, and Zach Coutinho went one for three
with a triple and two runs batted in. Earlier in the week,
Coutinho was the starting pitcher in a 9-2 loss to Seekonk,
and the Vineyarders managed only one hit - a second-inning
single by catcher Billy Johnson - in an 11-0 loss to Wareham
last Friday. The Vineyarders will be losing several players
to graduation including Mike Cecilio, Jon Nelson, Sean Jordan,
David Campbell and Herman, but Chaves, Coutinho, Nick Billingham,
Joel Rebello and Ryan Brennan will return next year. Tad
Gold, who had a breakout season by hitting .459 with two
home runs and an on-base percentage of .500, is also expected
to play a key role next year.

Martha's Vineyard 4, Fairhaven 3
The Blue Devils mounted a last-inning comeback, but fell
short with the game-tying run on third base after a spectacular
play by the Vineyarders. Matt Neilson was 3-for-4 at the
plate to lead Fairhaven, while Wade Mello pitched well in
his varsity debut. John Baldwin and Brian Sweeney also hit
the ball well for the Blue Devils (1-2), who will face GNB
Voc-Tech on Monday.
FAIRHAVEN - The Vineyarders capitalized on Fairhaven misplays
to squeeze out a win with five fewer hits than the Blue
Devils. Joe Rebello was 2-for-4 for Martha's Vineyard (1-2),
while Billy Johnson went 1-for-3. MV scored three unearned
runs in the third inning with the difference maker coming

relief for starting pitcher Max Shay, who struck out five
and gave up only four hits in five innings of work. With

in a rundown and was adjudged to have been safe back at
third. This proved crucial, as the runner scored on a wild
pitch to put O.R.R. ahead to stay. The lead increased to
7-4 on a laser that took a wicked hop up and over shortstop
Zach Coutinho's head. In the seventh, the visitors loaded
the bases thanks to some timely hitting and some Vineyard

and a two- RBI single to center completed the damage
GNBVT 7, MV 1
