SOUTH YARMOUTH — It was as dramatic a fielder's choice as the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School baseball team will experience this year.Chase Deluga scored a run with a ground ball to second with the scored tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, and D-Y beat Martha's Vineyard 4-3 yesterday. After the Vineyarders tied it at 3-all in the top of the seventh, Nick Montalto led off the climactic frame with a walk. Game Recaps
D-Y 5, Martha's Vineyard 3
OAK BLUFFS - The Dolphins pushed across two runs in the
top of the seventh in the season-opener for both clubs.Max
Shay scattered eight hits and struck out four in a solid
six innings for the Vineyarders. Billy Johnson's two-run
single capped a three-run sixth as MV rallied to tie it.Tad
Gold went 2-for-2 with a double for the Vineyard.
D-Y 12, MV 11
SOUTH YARMOUTH - Sean Geary blasted a three-run homer in
the second inning and Dennis-Yarmouth rallied for five runs
in the fifth to defeat the Vineyarders for the second game
in a row.D-Y is 2-0 while MV falls to 0-2.Brian Sweeney,
the Dolphins fifth hurler, came in with the bases loaded
and one out in the sixth and recorded a double play to preserve
the one-run lead.Nate Eldredge went 3-for-4 with two runs
scored for D-Y while Bobby Ewing was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.Phil
Ford was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's for the Dolphins
while Geary scored three times.Tad Gold, Zach Coutinho and
Mike Cecilio each had two hits for the Vineyarders.
In their home opener, the baseball team were boosted by
banner pitching from Max Shay, but were unable to turn back
a late-inning rally by Dennis-Yarmouth en route to a 5-3
loss in the first game of a home-and-home series against
the Dolphins. Shay scattered eight hits and struck out four
batters over six innings, but the Dolphins scored two runs
in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Tad Gold went
two-for-two with a double and catcher Billy Johnson had
a huge two-run single to cap a three-run sixth inning in
the loss. Two days later, the Vineyarders went on the road
and lost to Dennis-Yarmouth 12-11 in a wild game that featured
the home run ball, several lead changes and two big late-inning
rallies. The Dolphins jumped on Vineyard starter Zach Coutinho
early, pushing across four runs in the bottom of the first.
But as they had done in the opener, the Vineyarders were
able to put together a big inning and scored seven runs
in the top of the second thanks to big hits by Coutinho,
Gold and Mike Cecillio. Although he pitched out of several
jams, Coutinho's control became a problem as the game wore
on. Coach Gary Simmons pulled him with runners on base and
no outs in the fifth inning and brought in junior Kendall
Chaves. Despite a valiant effort, Chaves allowed several
of the inherited base runners to score and the Dolphins
rallied for five runs. In spite of the opening losses, Coach
Simmons said his team showed promise. "Last year we
didn't have a lot of three-run innings - never mind seven-run
innings - so it was good to see us put together a couple
of big hits," the coach said.
Apponequet 7, MV 2
LAKEVILLE - Tad Gold went 2-for-4 with a run scored for
Martha's Vineyard, which dropped to 0-3 with a loss to the
Lakers.Joel Rebello went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen
base for the Vineyarders.Errors proved costly for MV, which
got a solid performance out of starter Sean Jordan in spite
of the loss. Jordan gave up six earned runs and struck out
six in six innings.
The Vineyard varsity baseball team suffered its third loss
in three starts when it was bested by Apponequet last Wednesday,
7-2. M.V. pitcher Sean Jordan was touched for six earned
runs in six innings. He fanned six Lakers. For the third
time in as many games, Tad Gold stroked two hits in the
losing cause.Yesterday's game at Greater New Bedford was
postponed. Today the team plays at Fairhaven. Seekonk is
here Friday, April 20, for a 10:30 am game.
Seekonk 5, MV 4
OAK BLUFFS - Zach Coutinho pitched a complete game and
struck out seven but the Vineyarders remained winless on
the season.MV falls to 0-4, with three of their losses coming
by a total of four runs.Coutinho yielded eight hits and
two walks while allowing four earned runs. Adam Herman went
2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Vineyarders while Joel Rebello
was 2-for-4.Seekonk took a 5-0 lead by scoring three runs
in the second and two in the third. MV had runners on second
and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh but
failed to score.
D-R 8, Martha's Vineyard 0
NORTH DIGHTON — The Vineyard's Kendall Chaves surrendered
five first-inning runs then settled down and pitched well
but the offense never got on track yesterday.Chaves allowed
just six hits in his five innings of work. Martha's Vineyard
had eight hits, two of which came from Tad Gold (a double).Adam
Herman had the defensive gem of the day, gunning down a
runner from center field for the Vineyarders (0-5).
Case 11,
Martha's Vineyard 5
OAK BLUFFS — The Vineyarders jumped out to a 4-0
lead before the Cardinals chipped away en route to the comeback
victory.Tad Gold had a hit, an RBI, two stolen bases and
a run scored for MV (0-7). Mike Cecilio (RBI) and Zach Coutinho
(two RBIs) each doubled.
Apponequet 3, MV 2
OAK BLUFFS — Apponequet turned a botched squeeze
attempt into the winning run, taking advantage of a Vineyarders
error to claim the victory in eight innings. After Apponequet
grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, Martha's Vineyard responded
with an RBI double off the bat of Joel Rebello. The Vineyarders
took the lead in the fifth, when Tad Gold collected an RBI
single.Kendall Chaves pitched well through seven innings
for MV (0-8), scattering four hits and allowing two runs.
Baseball
After jumping out to a big lead in the bottom of the first,
it looked as if the baseball team would cruise to its first
win of the season on Monday against Case High School. But
the Cardinals had other plans, as they tied the game in
the third and went on to rout the Vineyarders by a final
score of 9-4. First baseman Mike Cecilio and starting pitcher
Zach Coutinho each drove in runs in the bottom of the first,
and a pair of errors by the Cardinals helped the Vineyarders
build an early 4-0 lead. The home team gave back two runs
in the top of the second. But Coutinho struck out a batter
with a runner on third to end the inning. The Cardinals
tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the third on a throwing
error, followed by a wild pitch that gave the Cardinals
a 5-4 advantage. They tacked on additional runs in the fourth,
fifth and seventh innings. Coach Gary Simmons said blowing
the early lead was especially frustrating for a team still
trying to find its first win of the season. "You never
want to lose ball games, but this was especially hard to
take. We know we are good enough to win these games, but
we have to avoid these mistakes that let the other teams
back into the game," the coach said. Wednesday's game
against Apponequet was equally frustrating. After jumping
out to lead in the fifth inning, the Vineyarders watched
the advantage slip through their fingers when the Lakers
tied it in the sixth by turning a botched squeeze play into
the winning run. Kendall Chaves pitched well enough to get
a win, scattering four hits over seven innings and allowing
only the two earned runs. With the loss, the Vineyarders
fell to 0-8 on the season. Coach Simmons said he has tried
to keep his players from focusing on the win-less streak."But
I know this sort of thing does start to affect their confidence.
I try to tell them that this team is better than their record
indicates," the coach said.
ORR 9, M. Vineyard 4
OAK BLUFFS — Four-run outbursts in the second and
sixth inning lifted Old Rochester to victory over the Vineyarders.MV
rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
to pull within four runs, but were unable to get any closer.
Billy Johnson was 1-for-4 with an RBI double, and Joel Ribello
went 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Vineyarders fall to 0-11.
Bulldogs bite Vineyard
Coach Gary Simmons was ejected for protesting a close call
at first base too strenuously, here, Monday, and the M.V.
baseball team suddenly came alive scoring three runs in
the bottom of the sixth. It wasn't enough to catch the Old
Rochester Bulldogs who scored four runs in the second and
sixth innings to post a 9-4 win, their eighth win against
two losses. The Vineyard remains winless at 0-9.
MV 5, GNBVT 3
OAK BLUFFS — A four-run fourth gave the Vineyarders
the lead, and Zach Coutinho's inside-the-park homer gave
them some breathing room against Greater New Bedford Voke
en route to their first win of the season.Sean Jordan pitched
5ª to get the win, striking out three. Nick Billingham
pitched the 1¤ innings, picking up his first save
of the season.Ryan Brennon went 1-for-2 for MV (1-11) and
had two RBIs in the decisive second inning. Adam Herman
added an RBI in the second and was 1-for-3. Coutinho scored
twice and went 1-for-3 with the home run.The Vineyarders
look to continue their winning ways at Bourne tomorrow.
Bourne 12, MV 4
BOURNE — Dalton Baxter struck out three in a complete-game
effort for the Canalmen, helping his own cause by driving
in a run in a South Coast Conference win over Martha's Vineyard.Bourne
(9-4, 8-4 SCC) scored nine runs in the first inning, Harold
Rose knocked a two-run single and Keith Bilodeau had an
RBI triple to go along with Baxter's run-scoring single. The
Vineyarders (1-9, 1-7 SCC) scored all four of their runs
in the sixth.Zach Coutinho knocked in two runs with a single
and Jwann Johnson had two doubles and a single.Scott Bukoski
doubled, tripled and scored three runs for the Canalmen
while Dan O'Keefe added two hits and two runs scored and
Nick Martin collected two hits.
Baseball
After weeks of bad breaks, bad plays and bad outcomes,
baseball coach Gary Simmons was in no mood for bad calls
at home against Old Rochester on Monday. With the Vineyarders
trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the umpire called
a Vineyard base runner out at first after being caught in
a pickle while trying to steal second. Despite ample evidence
he was safe - including tape of the play from a camcorder
along the first base line - the umpire was resolute in his
call, even after coach Simmons charged the field to argue
the call. "That was horrible - not even close! There's
no way he was out!" the coach shouted. The ump kept
his cool for the time being, but was not so kind two plays
later when coach Simmons again rushed the field to argue
what appeared to be very generous strike call. After jawing
with the coach for a while, the ump dramatically pointed
his finger in the air and ran Simmons out of the game. The
game then slowed as the ump eyed Coach Simmons as he slowly
left the field; he admonished the coach for staying too
close to the dugout, and later for hiding out in the shed
in back of home plate used as the broadcaster booth. "I've
never been thrown from a game so I didn't know what to do,"
admitted the coach after the game. "It all seemed a
little silly." The event seemed to put a spark in the
Vineyarders, who scored three runs in the bottom of the
sixth. Players turned their baseball caps inside out rally-cap
style, and the players excitedly chanted teammates' names
and cheered every play. "I wish I saw that kind of
emotion every game... but it shouldn't take [their coach
being thrown out]," coach Simmons said. The spark was
short-lived, however, as the home team was never able to
get any closer than four runs en route to a 9-4 defeat that
dropped the Vineyarders to 0-10. On Wednesday, the Vineyarders
finally got their first win of the season when they defeated
Greater New Bedford Vocational 5-3. Zach Countinho had an
inside-the-park home run and Sean Jordan pitched five-plus
innings in the win, striking out three, Ryan Brennon also
sent one-for-two with two RBIs, and Adam Herman also had
an RBI.
Dighton-Rehoboth 9, MV 5
NORTH DIGHTON — Kendell Chaves went the distance,
allowing eight hits and striking out four for Martha's Vineyard.
Dighton-Rehoboth scored eight runs over the second and third
innings, and didn't look back in the SCC win.Tad Gold hit
his first home run of the year in the fifth inning for the
Vineyard (1-14, 1-12 SCC). Zach Coutinho went 1-for-3 with
an RBI and a run scored.
A new field for the old game
The sun shone bright enough but a blustery wind made sweaters
de rigueur, a windbreaker even better, for those attending
the first baseball game to be played on the high school's
brand-new diamond, Monday. The fickle breeze picked up dust
and carried it into the faces of batters and fans - a minor
inconvenience, at least for the fans. Dugouts were only
indicated by foundations and bleachers were not yet available.
More funds are needed to finish the job, but the field is
already a major improvement to the school's sports venue
and those responsible for building it are to be congratulated
and thanked. The visiting team of Wareham Vikings certainly
found the field to their liking. They scored 17 runs while
holding the Islanders to three. Adam Herman scored two of
the Vineyard's runs. Wareham improved to 8-5, while M.V.
fell to 1-13.Last Wednesday, the Vineyarders posted their
only win of the season defeating Greater New Bedford, here,
on the old field, 5-3. M.V. scored four times in the bottom
of the fourth. Zach Coutinho's solo home run in the fifth
inning was welcome icing on the cake. Sean Jordan started
and pitched into the sixth inning for the win. Nick Billingham
closed and was credited with a save.Tomorrow the new baseball
field will be opened officially with ceremonies including
recognition of the team's seniors, thanks to various benefactors,
and a ball game with Bourne (11-4).
GNBVT 13, MV 11
NEW BEDFORD — Tyler Andrade had three hits and drove
in two runs as the Bears outslugged the Vineyarders.GNB
Voke is now 5-13 overall and 4-13 in the South Coast Conference.
Pablo Zayas had three hits and had four RBI's for the Bears.
Seekonk 12, MV 4
SEEKONK — The Warriors had a nine-run fifth inning
to down the Vineyarders.Zach Coutinho started for MV (1-16)
and went 5¤ innings, allowing seven hits and nine
earned runs while walking two and striking out two.Coutinho
and Mike Cecilio each had a pair of hits for the Vineyarders,
who wrap up their season with a home game today against
Bourne and a road contest tomorrow at Wareham.
Wareham 11, MV 0
WAREHAM — Billy Johnson's second-inning single was
all the Vineyarders could muster in their season-ending
defeat against the Vikings.MV finishes at 2-18.Wareham put
the game away early with seven runs in the bottom of the
first and three more in the third. Mike Laperriere homered
for the Vikings into Spillane Field's left-field bleachers.
In their next to last game of the season, their last on-Island,
the MVRHS varsity baseball team posted its second win, edging
Bourne, 4-2. Winning pitcher Kendall Chaves started and
went 6 2/3 innings before running out of gas. Nick Billingham
relieved for the final out. Adam Herman reached all three
times he went to the plate.Thursday, the Islanders lost
to Seekonk here, 9-2. Zach Countinho started and took the
loss, giving up nine earned runs. The final game of the disappointing
season was Friday, at Wareham. The Vikings put the game
away early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. The
Islanders were shut out with one hit, a double by Bill Johnson
in the second. The Vineyard varsity ended the year at 2-18.
Baseball
Coach Gary Simmons admits there were frustrating times
during his team's disappointing 2-18 season. It seemed his
team had one inning every game in which shoddy defense helped
the opponent put up a crooked number, while suspect pitching
would often spoil a game when the Vineyarders had a good
day at the plate. But he said there were bright spots and
he is confident the team can build on this season and break
out next year. "Starting pitching was a consistent
problem for us, but looking ahead we have some young arms
we might be able to build a solid rotation around. And there
is every reason to think that our offense will only get
better next year," the coach said. Due to a string
of postponements and rainouts, the Vineyarders played a
game every day last week. While they lost to Seekonk, Greater
New Bedford Vocational and Wareham, they won their last
home game of the season on Thursday, beating Bourne 4-2
thanks to strong starting pitching from Kendall Chaves.
Chaves pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, struck out four and gave
up five hits. Adam Herman reached base all three times he
went to the plate, and Zach Coutinho went one for three
with a triple and two runs batted in. Earlier in the week,
Coutinho was the starting pitcher in a 9-2 loss to Seekonk,
and the Vineyarders managed only one hit - a second-inning
single by catcher Billy Johnson - in an 11-0 loss to Wareham
last Friday. The Vineyarders will be losing several players
to graduation including Mike Cecilio, Jon Nelson, Sean Jordan,
David Campbell and Herman, but Chaves, Coutinho, Nick Billingham,
Joel Rebello and Ryan Brennan will return next year. Tad
Gold, who had a breakout season by hitting .459 with two
home runs and an on-base percentage of .500, is also expected
to play a key role next year.

Martha's Vineyard 4, Fairhaven 3
The Blue Devils mounted a last-inning comeback, but fell
short with the game-tying run on third base after a spectacular
play by the Vineyarders. Matt Neilson was 3-for-4 at the
plate to lead Fairhaven, while Wade Mello pitched well in
his varsity debut. John Baldwin and Brian Sweeney also hit
the ball well for the Blue Devils (1-2), who will face GNB
Voc-Tech on Monday.
FAIRHAVEN - The Vineyarders capitalized on Fairhaven misplays
to squeeze out a win with five fewer hits than the Blue
Devils. Joe Rebello was 2-for-4 for Martha's Vineyard (1-2),
while Billy Johnson went 1-for-3. MV scored three unearned
runs in the third inning with the difference maker coming

4-4.Josh Flanders (2 for 3 at the plate) then came on in
relief for starting pitcher Max Shay, who struck out five
and gave up only four hits in five innings of work. With
runners at the corners, the Bulldog at third got caught
in a rundown and was adjudged to have been safe back at
third. This proved crucial, as the runner scored on a wild
pitch to put O.R.R. ahead to stay. The lead increased to
7-4 on a laser that took a wicked hop up and over shortstop
Zach Coutinho's head. In the seventh, the visitors loaded
the bases thanks to some timely hitting and some Vineyard
defensive lapses. A fielder's choice scored the eighth run
and a two- RBI single to center completed the damage
GNBVT 7, MV 1

for a young Martha's Vineyard squad.Sophomore starter Joe
Keaney allowed 10 hits and six earned runs over five innings
for the Vineyard, which falls to 1-5, 1-3 SCC.John Nelson

of its losses didn't count in their quest for an MIAA berth.Although
the Vineyarders didn't make the tournament either, they
capped the season by winning six of their last seven games
to finish at 8-12.Matt Kurth went the distance and then
some to pick up the victory, striking out four, walking
three and allowing five hits and both runs.MV scored one
in the second inning and another in the fifth before the
Blue Knights tied it in the sixth. Jake Russo singled to
lead off the inning, advancing on a walk to Doug Bolton.
Kurth then hit Tyler Parker to load the bases with no outs. With
one out, MV's Jacques Penicaud made a spectacular diving
catch on a line drive but then picked up a throwing error
in an attempt to get the last out, scoring both Sandwich
runs to tie it at 2.Jordan Hoehn led off the ninth with
a double, advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Kurth before
scoring on Goldberg's hit.Sandwich right fielder Mike Curadossi
made an outstanding play in the sixth, making a catch deep
in outfield territory over a downed fence that cost the
Vineyarders a run.

2004 Varsity Game Recaps
March 29, 2004
E. Bridgewater 4, MV 3
EAST BRIDGEWATER - Martha's Vineyard baseball fans can only
hope the rest of the season won't be as hard on the nerves
as yesterday's opener. East Bridgewater was down to its
last strike before tying the game in the bottom of the seventh
inning. The host team then won the season opener for both
teams, 4-3, in extra innings on a flukey play. Matt Kurth
pitched the first seven innings for the Vineyard, fanning
10. He gave up three hits.
His fourth walk of the day came on a close, full-count pitch
with nobody on to start the tying rally with two out in
the seventh. Kurth switched over to second base in the eighth
inning and with one out and a runner on third, he made a
diving grab of a grounder. He scrambled to his knees and
fired a one-hop throw that seemed on line to catcher Jordan
Hoehn, but the ball hit the bat in front of the plate and
deflect high as the winning run scored.
Zach Mahoney tripled in the first run of the season in the
top of the first. Julian Hickman and Todd Hutchings had
RBI singles in the fifth, with a third runner thrown out
at the plate. Junior Simon Goldberg had two of MV's six
hits.
April 10, 2004
MV 3, NBV 0
NEW BEDFORD - Jacques Penicaud held New Bedford Voke to
three hits while striking out six to lead Martha's Vineyard.Penicaud,
a junior right-hander, walked three in the complete-game
victory. Penicaud also scored a run on a wild pitch in the
first after being hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.Simon
Golberg (2-for-4) scored the Vineyarders' second run, doubling
and scoring on a James Rebello double in the fourth. Mike
Holenko (2-for-3) singled, stole second and scored on Chris
Silvia's single in the sixth.
At New Bedford the MVRHS varsity nine beat Greater New
Bedford 3-0 behind Jacques Penicaud’s three-hit, six-K,
3-walk performance. Penicaud scored the first MV run after
taking one for the team in the first inning. Simon Goldberg
(2 for 4) doubled and scored when James Rebello followed
with a double in the fourth. Mike Holenko (2 for 3) was
driven in by Chris Silvia’s single in the sixth.
April 15, 2004
Bourne 2, MV 0
OAK BLUFFS - Canalmen pitcher Ryan Collins tossed a complete-game
two-hitter and struck out 11, out-dueling MV hurler Matt
Kurth for the victory.Bourne needed just a two-run second
inning to even its record at 2-2. MV's Kurth also went the
distance, allowing just one earned run while striking out
12. The Vineyarders are 1-2. MV pitcher Matt Kurth struck
out 12 batters, allowed just one earned run and deserved
a win versus Bourne, here, Thursday, but Coach Doug Hoehn’s
hardballers were shut out by the Canalmen’s Ryan Collins
on two hits and Bourne went home with the win, 2-0. Collins
fanned 11 and gave up two hits
April 17, 2004
Barnstable downs MV in baseball, 7-4
HYANNIS - Barnstable starting pitcher Erik Ellis and center
fielder Andy Davis helped make a winner out of reliever
John Medlin yesterday against Martha's Vineyard.A two-run
double by Ellis and an RBI double by Davis in the sixth
helped the Red Raiders, now 2-4, score five runs in the
inning, and Medlin pitched the seventh en route to a 7-4
victory. A Davis single also drove in a run in the fifth. On
the mound, Ellis allowed a two-run triple to Chris Sylvia
in the fifth inning, which staked the Vineyarders a 2-0
lead.V pitcher Jacque Penicaud went the distance in a game
that saw Red Raiders commit seven errors and the Vineyarders
six. Martha's Vineyard falls to 1-3.Saturday at Hyannis,
the Barnstable Red Raiders scored five times in the sixth
inning to pull out a 7-4 win and drop the Vineyarders to
1-3 on the season. Chris Sylvia’s triple with two
aboard gave MV a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Jacques Penicaud
went the distance for the Vineyard and was charged with
the loss. MV fielders commited six errors in the game.
April 23, 2004
MV sweeps Rockland, 5-0, 1-0
OAK BLUFFS - Two rock-solid pitching performances - both
shutouts - led Martha's Vineyard to a doubleheader baseball
sweep of Rockland yesterday. The Vineyarders (3-3) won the
first game 5-0, and the second 1-0.Matt Kurth, a junior
righty, got MV started in the opener by going the distance,
striking out 12 and allowing just five hits. Erik Soikkeli
went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and had a key two-run
single in the sixth inning. In the second game, Jacque Penicaud,
also a junior right-hander, gave up just one hit and struck
out six in his complete-game effort. He also scored the
winning run in the second inning, coming across on Julian
Hickman's single. The Vineyarders will play their third game
in 24 hours when they travel to Chatham to play the Blue
Devils today.
Last weekend, as the Red Sox were sweeping the evil empire
at Yankee Stadium, the Martha’s Vineyard varsity nine
was winning three and losing none and raising its season
record to 4-3. And they did it with panache.Rockland brought
its troops to the Island on Friday, but they left their
offense on the mainland.Together, Matt Kurth and Jacques
Penicaud pitched 14 innings of shutout baseball. In the Friday
opener Kurth scattered 5 hits while fanning 12. James Rebello
was hit by a pitched ball to lead off the second inning.
He stole second , went to third on Eric Soikkeli’s
first hit, then stole home with the only run MV would need. The
Islanders scored a seocnd run in the fifth. Penicaud reached
on an error, went to second on Hoehn’s ground out
and scored when Goldberg singled into center field. Soikkeli
was 2-for-3 and drove in two of the Vineyard’s five
runs in the sixth. In the twin bill, Penicaud allowed just
one hit and scored the only run of the game in the second.
With two down, he singled, stole second, and came home when
Julian Hickman hit safely.
April 24, 2004
CHATHAM - Martha's Vineyard owed its 8-5 baseball victory
to the offense, which kept Chatham pitcher Benny Buffa on
his toes yesterday.Greg Horne had an RBI triple and Todd
Monson had a single, a stolen base and a walk for the Blue
Devils (5-4).James Ribello went 3-for-4 with two doubles
for the Vineyard, which improves to 4-3. Zack Mahoney and
Brad Cortez each had two hits for MV, and Jacque Penicaud
had two singles, scored two runs, and pitched the last two
scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Saturday, at Chatham, the Islanders outlasted the Blue
Devils, 7-5. The Islanders scored in every inning. It was
Coach Doug Hoehn’s 100th coaching win at the high
school.Billy Panek started for the purple and kept Chatham
off the scoreboard for two innings, then was touched for
three runs in the third and gave way to Zach Mahoney. Meanwhile,
MV scored twice in the first and added single runs in the
second, third, and fourth.Chatham added two of its own in
the bottom of the fourth tying the score at five. Penicaud
came in to shut the door as the Islanders added three more
runs, one in each of the final innings. MV 8, Chatham 5.James
Rebello and Zach Mahoney were deprived of monstrous homeruns
in the sixth by enigmatic application of the peculiar ground
rules at Chatham’s unfenced field.Tuesday’s
game with Nantucket here was rained out and is rescheduled
for May 12. MV is at Nantucket on Tuesday.
April 29, 2004
MV 10, Sandwich 5
SANDWICH - Zach Mahoney's two-run homer in the first inning
set the tone for the Vineyarders. Both teams are now 5-3.The
Vineyarders also scored a pair of runs in the third, three
in the fourth and two in the fifth, bolstering starting
pitcher Brad Cortez, who went five-plus innings for the
win.Sandwich starter James DeVerna took the loss, giving
up six hits over five innings, striking out seven.Tyler
Parker, John Olsson and Jesse Anderson each had two hits
for the Blue Knights. MV starting varsity hurler Brad Cortez
went five and a third innings for the win versus Sandwich
at Sandwich, Thursday. The victory boosted the Islanders
record to 5-3 on the year. Loudest blow of the day was Zach
Mahoney’s two-run homer in the first inning. MV added
two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and two more
in the fifth, starting Coach Doug Hoehn off on his quest
for a second 100 wins at the high school.
April 30, 2004
HARWICH - The sophomores came through for the Harwich
baseball team yesterday in a 2-0 win over Martha's Vineyard.Sophomore
Ryan Soares pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out 13,
while sophomore Joe Thacher singled in the decisive runs
in the bottom of the sixth.Soares threw 66 of 92 pitches
for strikes in his first varsity start, outdueling the Vineyard's
Jacques Penicaud. Penicaud allowed just two runs on five
hits while striking out six. With runners on second and third,
Thacher singled in both for the win. Harwich (4-3) had runners
on first and third and no outs in the second but was unable
to score. James Rebello reached on an error in the top of
the second, but was thrown out at second, ending the threat
for the Vineyard (5-4).
May 4, 2004
NANTUCKET - Nantucket's John Farrell pitched a complete-game
no-hitter, striking out 14 and walking only one in leading
the Whalers to a 2-0 win over Martha's Vineyard yesterday.Farrell
also had two hits, including a double.Griffin LaFleur went
2-for-3 with a triple, and Sam Herrick went 2-for-3 with
a double and an RBI for the Whalers.Martha's Vineyard's
Jacque Penicaud also pitched a strong game in defeat.Tuesday,
Nantucket’s John Farrell hurled a no-hit shutout at
the Vineyard. He struck out 12 and helped his own cause
with two hits; one was a double. Jacques Penicaud pitched
well enough to deserve a win for the Vineyard.
May 5, 2004
Old Rochester 6, MV 4
OAK BLUFFS - Simon Goldberg hit a two-run single in the
bottom of the seventh to close the gap, but the Vineyarders
rally came up short.MV falls to 5-6.John Gibbons of Old
Rochester pitched a complete game four-hitter and also hit
a three-run home run in Bulldogs five-run third inning.Eric
hit a solo home run in the second inning and Bill Panek
pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Martha's Vineyard.Last
Wednesday, Old Rochester’s John Gibbons threw a four-hitter
at the Islanders here and helped his own cause with a three-run
homer in the five-run third. Eric Soikkeli hit a solo homer
in the second and Simon Goldberg drove in two with a seventh-inning
single. Billy Panek was effective in relief but Old Rochester
won, 6-4.
May 7, 2004
BOURNE - Bourne's Cyrus Curtis scattered four hits and
threw just 69 pitches for the Canalmen yesterday in a complete-game
2-1 baseball victory over Martha's Vineyard.Curtis gave
up one earned run and fanned three in his outing.Bourne
(7-6) pushed across the winning run in the last of the seventh.Freshman
Scott Bukoski reached on a hard shot that was scored an
error, moved to third on a hit-and-run executed by Wes Chilson,
and scored on a wild pitch.Jason Mazzola scored the first
Bourne run in the first inning, and Matt Gilbert had two
hits.Zack Mahoney hit a towering home run to right field
in the second inning for MV (5-7).If there was an athletic
prize given for tough luck, our nominee would be MV pitcher
Jacques Penicaud. The MVRHS hurler has an earned run average
of less than one but holds a 2 win, 6 loss season record. His
coach, Doug Hoehn, figures that Jacques has pitched five
shut outs but errors in the field resulting in unearned
runs have plagued him. Penicaud took the 2-1 loss at Bourne,
Friday, despite allowing no earned runs. The lone Vineyard
score came on Zach Mahoney’s circuit blast in the
second inning.
May 10, 2004
GNBVT 9, M. Vineyard 8
OAK BLUFFS - Martha's Vineyard mounted a four-run comeback
that culminated in a seventh-inning RBI double by Zack Mahoney,
but Greater New Bedford Voke Tech took the upper hand in
one extra frame yesterday.Jacques Penicaud had two hits
for MV (5-8), including a two-run single in the second and
an RBI double in the sixth.Simon Goldberg also drove in
a pair with a sixth-inning single.Monday, Mahoney capped
a Vineyard four-run rally in the seventh with a base-clearing
double, sending the game with Greater New Bedford into extra
innings tied at eight. Penicaud was on the mound in relief
of starter Matt Kurth when a 320-foot home run was launched
over the fence in right center to claim the 9-8 win.
May 12, 2004
Nantucket 6, M. Vineyard 2
OAK BLUFFS - Nantucket's John Farrell and Martha's Vineyard's
Matt Kurtz hooked up in a great pitchers' duel, with the
Whalers getting four unearned runs in the seventh on the
way to a 6-2 win over MV.With the score tied at 2 and two
out in the seventh, Nantucket had a runner on third when
the Vineyard couldn't make a clean play on Derek Maxwell's
topped grounder, allowing the go-ahead run to score.Ryan
Sosebee added a two-run double and Farrell a run scoring
single later in the inning. The game was tied because Vineyard
right fielder Erik Soikkeli had kept the game tied at 2
with a great catch, robbing Sam Herrick of a homer.Griffin
LaFleur's leadoff double led to an early 1-0 Whaler lead.
The Vineyard bunted its way to two first-inning runs, the
second coming on Zach Mahoney's suicide squeeze.Farrell
homered to lead off the fourth to tie it.Farrell fanned
15, walked three and allowed just four hits. Kurth struck
out 13, walked two and surrendered six hits. The Vineyard’s
pitcher Matt Kurth matched Nantucket’s John Farrell
for six and two thirds innings until a purple error led
to four unearned runs in the top of the seventh, handing
the game to the Whalers, 6-2. Nantucket drew first blood
as Griffen LaFleur led off with a double and came around
to score. The Vineyard answered with two in the bottom of
the first, scoring the go-ahead run on a suicide squeeze
by Zach Mahoney.Farrell’s solo home run in the fourth
tied the game until the flood gates opened in the seventh.Farrell

out 13, walked two, and gave up six hits.
May 14, 2004

the same, but 18 more runs were scored. On May 1, the Rough
Riders (2-0) topped the Vineyarders in a vintage 2-0 pitcher's
duel. Yesterday, the Rough Riders (8-6) scored five unearned
runs to make up for being outhit 14-9.Sean Davis and Joe
Thacher each went 2-for-3 to support Harwich starter Ryan
Soares, who lasted five innings. Reliever Adam McGillen

Jacques Penicaud went 3¤ innings, relieved by Zack
Mahoney.Simon Goldberg went 2-for-3 for MV with three RBIs.
Sophomore Tony Cortez, playing in his first varsity game,
also went 2-for-3.The Vineyarders also received two hits
from Eric Soikkeli, Jordan Hoehn, and James Rebello. The

scored five unearned runs and took the game, 11-9.Five Islanders
had two hits apiece: Simon Goldberg, Tony Cortez, Eric Soikkeli,
Jordan Hoehn, and James Rebello.
May 21, 2004

junior right-hander Jacque Penicaud settled down and held
off Sandwich yesterday en route to a 4-3 baseball win.MV's
Chris Sylvia doubled, moved to third on a ground out and
scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Matt Kurth, who had two RBIs, tied the game at 3-all with
a solo home run in the fourth for Martha's Vineyard (7-11).The
Blue Knights (8-9) scored all their runs in the third inning
but were held off the boards after that. Penicaud finished
with eight hits and one walk allowed while striking out
five in the win.Kurth also had a sacrifice fly in the second
for the Vineyarders, who got their first run earlier in
the inning on an errant pickoff throw.Jacques Penicaud allowed
Sandwich eight hits but survived to win the 4-3 game, Friday.
The Blue Knights scored all their runs in the third inning. The
Vineyarders scored twice in the bottom of the second on
a error and a Matt Kurth sacrifice fly. Then, after Sandwich
took a one-run lead, Kurth’s solo home run tied the
score at three. In the fifth, Chris Sylvia doubled, moved
to third on a ground out, and scored the game-winner on
a wild pitch. It was the purple’s seventh win against
11 losses. Sandwich fell to 8-9.
May 22, 2004
East Bridgewater 6, MV 4

allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out eight
and walking five. The defense behind him committed five
errors, while the offense supporting him scored three runs

scored on Mahoney's single.Jordan Hoehn was 2-for-3 for
MV (7-12). Eric Soikelli scored two runs, both on wild pitches.
Saturday it was Matt Kurth’s turn to be victimized
by a sloppy MV defense. Kurth allowed just one earned run
on five hits and fanned eight. But five bases on balls and
five fielding errors opened the door and the Vikings of
East Bridgewater took full advantage. Final Score: MV 4,
EB 6.Zach Mahoney was 3-for-4. Both James Rebello and Jordan
Hoehn had two hits. Eric Soikkeli scored twice.
May 26, 2004

go to catch Foxboro, whose 11th win should factor into tournament
seedings.Chris Sylvia went 2-for-3 for MV with an RBI and
two steals.Zach Mahoney cracked a three-run homer to center
in the seventh. He finished with four RBIs, but also was
tagged with the loss after two innings as the MV starter.MV
finishes with a regular season record of 7-13. Wednesday,
the MVRHS varsity baseball team scored five runs in the
bottom of the seventh, including a 3-run homer by starting

Jamie Rebello (walk) with no outs. After a strikeout, Kurth
was nailed at third on a 6-3-5 double play. Matt Seeman
(0-1) went seven innings and allowed only three hits, struck
out seven and walked four. Only one of Arlington Catholic's
runs was earned. Kurth had two doubles to lead MV,which
could muster only four hits.
April 15, 2003
ORR 11, Martha's Vineyard 4
MATTAPOISETT - One bad inning cost the Vineyarders as they
dropped their second straight.
Old Rochester scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth
after MV had taken a 3-0 lead in the top half.
James Rebello went 3-for-4 with a double and triple, which
