Falmouth 6, Wareham 2
OAK BLUFFS — Falmouth jumped out to an early lead,
scoring runs in the first three innings en route to a victory
over Wareham in the Cape League's annual game on Martha's
Vineyard.
Ryan Jones (Wichita State) led off the first with a infield
single, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Thomas
Cunningham (Jacksonville State) drove in Jones on a groundout
to second. Hunter Morris (Auburn) doubled the Commodore
lead with a solo home run, his second of the year. Falmouth
(6-13-1) struck for three runs in the third inning on an
RBI single by Jones and a two-run single by Brian Fletcher
(Auburn). Wareham (10-9-1) scored twice in the top of the
seventh. Brett Eibner (Arkansas) scored on a wild pitch
and Chris Hannick (Cal-Northridge) doubled in Chris Leonida
(Georgia Tech), but the Gatemen left the bases loaded when
Connor Rowe (Texas) grounded into an inning-ending double
play. Fletcher tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning
with an RBI single to put Falmouth on top by four. Taylor
Wall (Rice) picked up his second victory of the season,
going six innings, allowing two hits and fanning six.
Commodores win Connors Cup on Martha’s
Vineyard

OAK BLUFFS – In an unconventional location for a Cape
League game, the Commodores played conventional baseball
for a 6-2 win over the Wareham Gatemen on Martha’s
Vineyard yesterday. Starter Taylor Wall (Rice) went six
scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season
for Falmouth. Wall faced just two batters over the minimum
during his outing striking out six, allowing just three
hits and one walk. As good as the pitching was for the Commodores,
the home team in this year’s game on the Vineyard,
the hitting was even better.
Falmouth got on the board in the first inning when Ryan
Jones (Wichita State) bunted to reach first and then advanced
to third on a throwing error by Wareham’s starting
pitcher Matt Barnes (UConn). Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville
State) followed with an RBI groundout. In the second, Hunter
Morris (Auburn) continued his power streak hitting his second
home run of the season. With shorter than usual fences at
Vineyard Baseball Park at Martha’s Vineyard Regional
High School, Morris led off the inning sending a bomb over
the right center field wall. Wall sent the Gatemen down
in the third, and the Commodores continued to score in the
bottom half of the inning. BA Vollmuth led off the inning
with a single deep into the hole between third and short
that was tracked down by Gatemen shortstop Jake Lemmerman
(Duke) but he could not make a throw. Scott Lawson (Miami)
reached on a bunt after Vollmuth. Ryan Jones (Wichita State)
appeared to lay down a sacrifice bunt but beat the throw
by catcher Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) to first. Vollmuth
then took home plate from second base after nobody covered
home. Cunningham then singled and Brian Fletcher, one of
the hottest hitters in the Falmouth lineup singled in two
more runs to give Falmouth a 5-0 cushion.
The Wareham offense got going once Taylor Wall left the
game in the seventh. Mitch Mormann (Des Moines Area CC)
came on for Falmouth. Mormann struck out the first batter
he faced but allowed four consecutive batters to reach base
on two hits and two walks, along with two wild pitches.
One run scored on a wild pitch, and another was knocked
in on a Chris Hannick (Cal State Northridge) single. Patrick
Cooper (Des Moines Area CC) relieved Mormann after that
at bat. Cooper got Connor Rowe (Texas) to ground into an
inning ending double play. With Falmouth up in the seventh,
the offense got one more run on the board courtesty of a
Brian Fletcher RBI single to give him three on the day.
Action cooled down until the top of the ninth inning when
Georgia’s Cecil Tanner came on to try and close things
out. The lanky 6’6” righthander struck out Brett
Eibner (Arkansas) to start the ninth. He then hit Leonida
and walked Ryan LaMarre (Michigan) to put two runners on.
Tanner relied on his sharp breaking curveball and mid 90’s
fastball to get Chris Hannick for the second out. Then he
walked Lemmerman to load the bases.
Cue Alex Dickerson. Tabbed the Big-10 freshman of the year
at Indiana, Dickerson hit a freshman record 14 home runs
for the Hoosiers. Up to the plate with the bases loaded
and representing the tying run, Thursday would not be his
day. Tanner blazed fastballs by Dickerson to get him swinging
on strikes to end the game. Falmouth now holds the John
and Dorothy Connors Memorial cup after dropping the first
game on the Vineyard last season to Wareham 6-1.

07/09/09 - Commodores Sink Gatemen on Island

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. Despite a "neutral site", the
Wareham Gatemen once again struggled offensively on the
road - this time on Martha's Vineyard - as the Falmouth
Commodores came away with a 6-2 victory this afternoon.
The Commodores scored runs in each of the first three innings;
highlighted by a Hunter Morris (Auburn) solo homer in the
second inning and FOUR infield singles (3 being bunts) in
the 3rd inning and cruised to an easy victory over the Gatemen
at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. Matt Barnes (UCONN)
lasted only 3 innings as the Wareham starter, giving up
9 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) before giving way to the Gatemen
bullpen who had another effective outing. After giving up
a run in each of the first 2 innings, Falmouth played "small
ball" in the 3rd inning. B.A. Volmuth (S. Mississippi)
started off the inning with an infield single. Incredibly,
Scott Lawson (Miami), Ryan Jones (Wichita State) and Thomas
Cunningham (Jacksonville State) all pulled off bunt singles
following Volumuth; resulting in a scored run and loading
the bases. Brian Fletcher (Auburn) then followed up with
a "traditional" hit down the third base line;
driving in 2 runs and giving Falmouth a 5-0 lead. Taylor
Wall (Rice) could not be touched by the Wareham offense
as they managed only 2 hits, struck out 6 times and walked
only once against the Falmouth starting pitcher. The Gatemen
tried to make a game of it in the 7th once Wall was lifted
and got to face the Commodore bullpen. Brett Eibner (Arkansas)
walked and later scored on a wild pitch before Chris Hannick
(Cal-State Northridge) doubled to score Cole Leonida (Georgia
Tech). With one out and 2 on base on; giving Wareham it's
best chance of the game, Alex Dickerson (Indiana) grounded
into an inning ending double play.
Another Brian Fletcher rbi single would give Falmouth a
6-2 lead in the 7th but the Gatemen would threaten in the
top of the 9th by loading the bases and bringing the tying
run to the plate. However, Alex Dickerson would strike out
to end the game and give the Commodores the victory. Falmouth's
win gives the two teams a victory each in the "series"
on the Vineyard as the Gatemen defeated Falmouth last year
6-1. For Wareham offensively, Shea Vucinich (Wash State),
Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech), Ryan LaMarre (Michigan) and
Chris Hannick (Cal-State Northridge) had the four hits for
Wareham. Scott Rembisz (Florida Int'l), Bruce Kern (St.
John's) and Josh Slaats (Hawaii) combined out of the Gatemen
bullpen to pitch 5 innings, giving up one earned run, 5
hits and 5 strikeouts. The Gatemen have an off-day tomorrow
and will return to action at Spillane Field on Saturday
when they welcome defending CCBL Champion Harwich for a
7:00pm game. Josh Mueller (Eastern Illinois) is the expected
starter. Wareham's record is now 10-9-1 on the season and
remains in 2nd place; 3 points behind division leading Bourne.
